Apple Aims High: Classroom iPads/iPhones, Digital Textbooks and Teaching Forums
Apple is taking on new initiatives to have public school systems use their hardware devices to facilitate learning in and outside the classroom. There are studies showing improved learning rates and achievement using electronic media in school aged children. Enhancing the students’ experience at a young age could lead to “lifetime learning” as an ultimate value to our society and individual accomplishment and satisfaction. Of course, the cost of education will also be significantly lower.
There is a new concept being applied to learning: “Gamification”. Gamification combines our inherent tendency to enjoy gaming with engaging technology, as a means to enhance learning. There could conceivably be different modules of presenting a given set of materials, addressing the different ways that students learn best.
Furthermore they have applied for patents on using the iPhone and iPads for closed conference virtual “classrooms” between students and professors. There could be personalized audio/visual streaming from the speaker (anywhere in the world!) to the group via iPads. They are even looking at building in course textbooks and materials right into the iPad or iPhone.
Apple has had huge success in making the “user experience” something exciting. What a huge opportunity for our kids…..and Apple.
