The Benefits of Breast Feeding
Not sure if you'll be breastfeeding your baby? Our Austin, TX, pediatrician, Dr. Peter Kangos of Kangos Pediatrics, shares a few breastfeeding benefits you'll want to consider.
Breast milk contains all of the nutrients your baby needs to grow and thrive. Every time you breastfeed your child, he or she consumes easily digestible proteins needed to regulate cells and organs, lactose that decreases stomach bacteria and improves calcium absorption, vitamins, carbohydrates, and fats necessary for eye, nervous system, and brain development.
Stronger immune system
The breast milk your baby receives contains leukocytes, cells that act as natural immune system boosters. Babies that are breastfed tend to develop fewer ear infections than bottle-fed infants and are also less likely to have diarrhea or become ill with respiratory infections, such as colds, viruses, or pneumonia.
More stable weight
There's some evidence that children who were breastfed find it easier to maintain healthy weights throughout their lives. As obesity can increase the risk of diabetes, cancer, and other serious diseases, weight maintenance is an important benefit of breastfeeding.
Excellent bonding opportunity
Breastfeeding involves skin-to-skin contact, which can enhance bonding between mother and child. Your breastfeeding sessions can also help you feel more relaxed and provide the opportunity to spend a little one-on-one time with your baby.
Cost and convenience
Buying formula month after month in Austin stores can strain your budget. Breastfeeding is completely free and extremely convenient. You'll never have to waste time preparing or cleaning bottles when your breast milk is immediately available.
